The Golden Triangle: A 7-Day Itinerary for First-Timers
The Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra and Jaipur — is the classic introduction to India, and for good reason. Three iconic cities within easy reach of each other pack in Mughal grandeur, a wonder of the world, and the pink palaces of Rajasthan. Here's how to do it in a week without rushing.
Golden Triangle route & distances
| Leg | Distance | Best transport |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi → Agra | ~230 km | Gatimaan/Shatabdi express train (~2 hrs) |
| Agra → Jaipur | ~240 km | Private car (stop at Fatehpur Sikri) |
| Jaipur → Delhi | ~280 km | Train or expressway car (~5 hrs) |
Day-by-day
Days 1–2 · Delhi
Split your time between Old and New Delhi. See Jama Masjid, ride a rickshaw through Chandni Chowk, and pay respects at Humayun's Tomb and Qutub Minar. Day 2, slow down with India Gate and the museums.
Day 3 · Delhi → Agra
Take the morning express train. Visit Agra Fort in the afternoon light, then save the Taj Mahal for sunrise the next day.
Day 4 · Taj Mahal → Jaipur
Be at the Taj gates for opening — dawn is unforgettable and far cooler. Drive to Jaipur, stopping at the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri en route.
Days 5–6 · Jaipur
The Pink City rewards two full days: the Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal and the Jantar Mantar observatory, plus the bazaars for block-print textiles and jewellery.
Day 7 · Return to Delhi
Travel back for your onward flight — or extend the triangle into Udaipur, Jodhpur or Ranthambore for tigers.
